The First 50 Years at Palomar : 1949 – 1999

چکیده
PROLOGUE In 1999 we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the initial bringing into operation of the Palomar 200-inch Hale telescope. When this telescope was dedicated, it opened up a much larger and clearer window on the universe than any telescope that had gone before. Because the Hale telescope has played such an important role in twentieth century astrophysics, we decided to invite one or two of the astronomers most familiar with what has been achieved at Palomar to give a scientific commentary on the work that has been done there in the first fifty years. The first article of this kind which follows is by Allan Sandage, who has been an active member of the staff of what was originally the Mount Wilson and Palomar Observatories, and later the Carnegie Observatories for the whole of these fifty years. The article is devoted to the topics which covered the original goals for the Palomar telescope, namely observational cosmology and the study of galaxies, together with discoveries that were not anticipated, but were first made at Palomar and which played a leading role in the development of high energy astrophysics. The Palomar work first showed how optical astronomy would be the key to our understanding of observations made in other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, particularly at radio wavelengths and at X-ray energies. —Geoffrey Burbidge, Editor

On the QSO content of the First Byurakan Survey and the completeness of the Palomar Green Survey
The second part of the First Byurakan Survey is aimed at detecting all bright (B < 16.5) UV-excess starlike objects in a large area of the sky. By comparison with major X-ray and radio surveys we tentatively identified as QSOs 11 FBS objects. We made spectroscopic observations of nine of them. We found six new QSOs bringing the total number of known QSOs in this survey to 42. By comparison with...
متن کاملModern views on the management of placenta praevia.
The treatment of placenta praevia up to recent years has been seriously influenced by the belief that once the complication manifests itself by haemorrhage immediate treatment should be undertaken. This approach to the subject has resulted in a maternal mortality of 5.7 per cent. and a foetal mortality of 50-60 per cent. (Browne and Comyns Berkeley). In a personal series of 275 cases supervised...

Background and Aim: The present article attempts to define the current trend for age at first marriage, based on the nationwide Health Survey of 1999 and using the Brass model.Material and Methods: The national Health survey was conducted in 1999 and involved 1/1000 of the total population, selected via cluster sampling (clusters of 8 households each). The sample used for the present study consi...
متن کاملLETTER TO THE EDITOR: Measuring Molecular Information
Although information theory was developed more than 50 years ago (Shannon, 1948, 1949), it is widely accepted (Gappmair, 1999), and a complete compendium of Claude Shannon's works was recently published (Sloane & Wyner, 1993). The application of information theory to understanding binding sites of proteins on DNA or RNA was published more than 10 years ago (Schneider et al., 1986), and since th...
متن کاملThe Outer Galactic Halo As Probed By RR Lyr Stars From the Palomar Transient Facility + Keck 1
We present initial results from our study of the outer halo of the Milky Way using a large sample of RR Lyr(ab) variables datamined from the archives of the Palomar Transient Facility. Of the 464 RR Lyr in our sample with distances exceeding 50 kpc, 62 have been observed spectroscopically at the Keck Observatory. vr and σ(vr) are given as a function of distance between 50 and 110 kpc, and a ver...
